How to calculate fuel needed for a trip?

Our trip fuel calculator helps you plan your trips by calculating exactly how many liters of fuel you need, how many refueling stops you'll need to make and how much the complete journey will cost. It's the perfect tool to calculate fuel and avoid surprises on the road. Enter your average consumption, trip distance and get accurate results instantly.

How does fuel calculation work?

To calculate fuel cost you only need three data points: your vehicle's average consumption (liters per 100 km), the total distance of the trip and the tank capacity. The basic formula is: Liters needed = (Distance × Consumption) / 100. For example, if your car consumes 6.5 L/100km and you're traveling 350 km: (350 × 6.5) / 100 = 22.75 liters. Our fuel calculator also tells you how many refills you'll need based on your tank capacity and calculates the total cost by multiplying liters by current fuel price.

Formula to calculate trip fuel

Liters needed = (Distance in km × Consumption L/100km) / 100. Number of refills = Liters needed / Tank capacity (rounded up). Total cost = Liters needed × Price per liter. Practical example: 400 km trip with 6 L/100km consumption and 50L tank. Liters = (400 × 6) / 100 = 24 liters. With gasoline at €1.45/L: 24 × 1.45 = €34.80. Refills = 24 / 50 = 1 (no refilling needed if starting with full tank). Note that consumption may increase due to high speed, aggressive driving, air conditioning, extra weight or underinflated tires.

Calculator advantages

  • Free trip fuel calculator: plan your trips at no cost
  • Calculate exact liters: know how much fuel you need to reach your destination
  • Number of refills: indicates how many stops you'll need based on your tank
  • Estimated total cost: calculates how much you'll spend on fuel for your trip
  • Multiple fuel types: gasoline 95, 98, diesel and electric
  • Different vehicles: 4, 5, 7 and 9 seats with different tank capacities
  • Instant results: real-time calculations as you enter data
  • Plan trips better: avoid running out of fuel on the road

This fuel calculator provides estimates based on average consumption. Actual consumption may vary according to your driving style, vehicle condition, load, terrain and weather conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I calculate my car's average fuel consumption?
To calculate your average consumption: 1) Fill the tank completely, 2) Reset the trip odometer to zero, 3) Drive normally until the next refuel, 4) When you refuel, note the liters that go in and kilometers driven, 5) Apply the formula: (Liters consumed / kilometers driven) × 100 = Average consumption (L/100 km). Example: if you've driven 550 km and 35 liters go in when filling: (35 / 550) × 100 = 6.36 L/100 km.
How to calculate fuel consumed on a trip?
To calculate fuel cost you need three data points: your car's average consumption (you can see it on the trip computer or calculate it yourself), the total trip distance (use Google Maps or GPS) and the tank size. The formula is: Liters you'll use = (Distance × Consumption) / 100. Example: if your car consumes 6 L/100km and you're traveling 400 km: (400 × 6) / 100 = 24 liters.
How to know how many liters of fuel I need for a trip?
Step by step: 1) Note the total trip distance (round trip if applicable), 2) Multiply kilometers by your vehicle's average consumption, 3) Divide the result by 100. That number tells you the liters you need. Example: 600 km trip with 7 L/100km consumption: (600 × 7) / 100 = 42 liters. Our calculator does these calculations automatically and tells you how many stops you'll need.
Why use the fuel calculator?
The fuel cost calculator allows you in less than 30 seconds to know the total liters you'll use, whether your tank will be sufficient and if you'll need to refuel along the way. By calculating fuel for your trip before leaving, you drive more relaxed because you know in advance when and where to stop. Plus, if your trip is long, you can choose the gas station with the best price instead of being in a hurry.
What factors can make me consume more fuel?
Several factors increase consumption: high speed (the faster, the more fuel), vehicle weight (being loaded increases consumption), low tire pressure (increases resistance), excessive use of air conditioning or climate control, aggressive driving (harsh accelerations and braking), mountainous terrain and adverse weather conditions (headwind, rain).
How much does fuel currently cost in Spain?
Fuel prices vary weekly and by region. In 2026, approximate prices are: Gasoline 95 (≈€1.45/L), Gasoline 98 (≈€1.55/L), Diesel (≈€1.35/L). Our calculator allows you to enter the current price you see at your gas station for a more accurate cost calculation. You can check updated prices on the Ministry for Ecological Transition website.
How to reduce fuel consumption on long trips?
To save fuel: maintain constant speed between 90-110 km/h (most efficient), use cruise control on highways, avoid harsh accelerations and braking, check tire pressure before leaving, remove unnecessary weight from trunk, close windows at high speed, use air conditioning moderately and plan your route to avoid traffic jams.
Does my car have enough range for this trip?
To find out, compare the liters you need (according to our calculator) with your tank capacity. If the needed liters are less than tank capacity, you have sufficient range leaving with a full tank. If greater, our calculator tells you exactly how many refills you'll need to make during the journey.
