How does the vacation calculator work?

Our calculator allows you to calculate in a simple and precise way the number of vacation days you are entitled to. Just enter the working days your company gives (default 22), your start date and contract end date.

How are vacations calculated?

The calculation is done by dividing the annual vacation days by 12 months, obtaining the vacation days per month (normally 1.8 days). Then multiply by the months worked to get the total days you are entitled to.

Calculation formula

The basic formula to calculate vacation days is very simple. If you work full-time, divide the 22 working days by 12 months and multiply by the months worked.

Vacation days = (22 ÷ 12) × months worked

Special cases

  • Severance pay: Unused vacation days are paid at a rate of 1.8 days per month worked.
  • Part-time: Vacation time is proportional to the duration of the workday.
  • Partial ERTE: Time on ERTE does not count as working time for vacation calculation.
  • Reduced workday: Calculated the same as part-time, proportional to hours worked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many vacation days am I entitled to per year?
By law, you are entitled to a minimum of 30 calendar days of vacation per year (or 22 working days). The formula is: (22 ÷ 12) × months worked = vacation days. For example, if you have worked 6 months, you are entitled to 11 working days of vacation.
How are unused vacation days calculated?
Unused vacation days are calculated the same way: 1.8 days per month worked. They are paid in the severance pay when the employment relationship ends. The amount equals daily salary × unused days.
How are vacations calculated for part-time work?
In part-time work you have the right to the same vacation days, but the time is proportional to your workday. If you work 5 hours, you will have 5 hours of vacation per day. It is useful to use a time tracking app to control exact hours.
How many working days are there in a year?
For a person who works Monday to Friday, there are about 260 working days per year, excluding weekends and the 14 holidays on the labor calendar (national and regional holidays).
Can the company decide when to take vacations?
It cannot impose them unilaterally. There must be agreement between company and employee. The collective agreement usually establishes the preferred period, but the final decision requires negotiation. A balance is sought between the interests of both parties.
How far in advance must the company confirm vacations?
The company must communicate vacation dates with a minimum of two months in advance. It must publish the vacation calendar so all workers know it and can plan.
Can the company change already granted vacations?
If more than 2 months remain, it can change them by agreement. If less than 2 months remain, it can only change them with employee agreement. It cannot do so unilaterally in any case.
Can vacations be paid instead of taking them?
No, it is illegal. They are only paid in two cases: retirement due to permanent disability or contract termination. Unused vacations are paid in severance pay at the corresponding daily salary.
